Common questions
Why do I need a surrender certificate?
Indian law does not permit dual citizenship. After becoming British you must surrender your Indian passport, and the surrender certificate is required for your OCI application.
Can I apply for OCI at the same time?
Yes. The surrender and OCI applications can often be prepared together. We will advise you during the case check — see Fresh OCI Card Application.
Is there a penalty for late surrender?
If the Indian passport was used or not surrendered after acquiring British citizenship, a penalty may apply. We will confirm the fees for your case.
Are government and VFS fees included?
No. Surrender and VFS fees are paid separately.
